My Logo Expedition

If your logo looks like everyone else’s logo, you don't saying anything at all. To communicate the right message, it’s important to find the right designer–someone who takes the time to understand your organization’s core values and what makes you different. Then you can focus on creating a logo that truly captures your story. If you make your logo too complicated it can be interpreted the wrong way. If you are going to use multiple shapes, colors, etc., then know why you are doing what you’re doing. Every element counts, and you should be able to explain to anyone what each piece means. Make sure your logo has personality, because personality matters. Think about logos you really love. Why do you love them? And think about those you don’t like. Why do you remember them? Are they overly complex, too literal, too abstract, or do they strike your interest and leave you wanting more? You may think that a more literal logo would better appeal to your constituencies. But remember that before you try to please your board of directors, lawyer, and staff members, you’re first catering to people who ultimately like beautiful things. When evaluating your logo or approaching the redesign process, here are a few key words that can help:
  • Simple
  • Has personality
  • Tells a story
  • Every element carries meaning
  • Void of any unnecessary elements
If you can do these things you are almost guaranteed to have a story told with your logo. And I believe that is how logo design tells a story, by the creative process to get to the final logo result.

Semester 1 Logo:
This is my logo from the first Semester, of this lovely year. I am actually kind of embarrassed with this logo, because of how much improvement I made in less than a year. This logo, was simple and very unprofessional (not that they always need to be professional). I realize now that the font is too girly for my personality. The color choice was atrocious, and the text placement makes me want to cry. It actually almost hurts to look at. It in no way tells anything about me or my story.

Art-boards from Semester 2's Logo:
These were some of my different designs, which was basically just changing the font, and the font-layout. But these really helped me out in the creation of my final logo, and my story, told through that final logo.

Now skip ahead 4ish months and 3ish Art-boards later. . .

Semester 2 Logo:

This is my logo from second Semester of this year. I am absolutely in love with this logo. I know there is always room for improvement, but for this moment in time I am very pleased with my final outcome. I made sure to keep it simple, but sophisticated at the same time. I found a spontaneous sketchy, but formal font for my name, and then I used a formal, vectory font for e-Comm. All of which is inside a discus, because that is what my life is. I chose to make the discus blue, because that is the main color of ONW, it is the same color as the discus I won JV League with freshman year, and blue has many meanings, but its main meaning fits me well. Blue symbolizes harmony. To accompany a melody you need a harmony. Both my name and blue's meaning fits another side of my story which is the musical side. In conclusion this logo fits both my muscular and my musical side.

So to conclude my essay-like blogger post, I want to say this...

Creativity shouldn't be limited, because is can take people place they never thought they could go. This logo only need to be made in Illustrator, and other than that I had no creative boundaries, and that allowed me to do me, and make my logo, my story. Creativity has no limit.
